Astounding! My Senator – Ryan McDougle has Come Out for Some Expungement of Youthful Drug/Alcohol Convictions! (Emails corrected!)

I could not have been more astounded if I read Tom White had joined the Communist Party!

McDougle: Expunge first-time pot, alcohol possession convictions for under-21 offenders

My senator?  Ryan McDougle?  Well it’s true.  And I agree with him!  It is the kind of visionary thinking that will help the GOP win elections in the future without having to get three or four to run for sheriff in every county of the Commonwealth.

Here’s the story at Richmond.com and here’s the story in the Virginian-Pilot:

McDougle, a criminal lawyer and co-chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus, said in an interview that the legislation is prompted by the desire to not have “bad choices” made in early adulthood prevent offenders from getting jobs and opportunities later that help them become “a productive and economic contributor to society.”

He said the legislation would not alter the punishment for the crime, which can include driver’s license suspension, a fine and possible jail time, but it would provide a pathway for one-time offenders to have a clean slate after their probationary period.

A better solution would be to lower the drinking age for beer and maybe unfortified wine to 18.  But this is a start.  (I understand from a VERY reliable source that in Charlottesville, first offenders of the underage drinking age rule if they are over 18 can get a deferral upon terms so it does not show up on their record.)

Here is another account in the Daily Press (Williamsburg):

State Sen. Ryan McDougle, chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus, said the bill will be one of a few criminal justice reform measures likely to move in the coming legislative session, which begins next month. He said people under 21 should be given a shot at expungement to improve their employment options.

The legislation would deal with simple possession cases, not selling marijuana. McDougle, a former prosecutor, said there’s no method for expungement now.

Let all my readers do two things:  Let’s thank Senator McDougle for this wonderful idea – send him an email at district04 [at] state.virginia.gov.

And lets’ ask Delegate Chris Peace and Buddy Fowler to join him.

We need to stop the tendency toward overcriminalization and criminal records.  Let me also add:  I would suggest a law similar to Alabama’s Youthful Offender law that allows a young offender to avoid a felony record by adhering to certain conditions.

The Council has spoken, the votes have been cast, and the results are in for this week’s Watcher’s Council match up.

“There is a certain enthusiasm in liberty, that makes human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.”

This week’s winning essay,The Noisy Room’s Harry’s Heroine Hikes 1,000 Miles For Wounded Troops… She’s An American Warrior All The Way [Video] is a story of heroism, of not giving in. Here’s a slice:

Meet Kirstie Ennis, one of the bravest Americans out there. Her story moved me to tears and I wanted to share it with you.

Kirstie is a 24 year-old Marine Corps veteran who toured in Afghanistan. Her life changed dramatically on June 23rd, 2012 when the massive Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter that she was riding on as the door gunner crashed. She survived, but woke up to a living nightmare that she almost didn’t make it through.

The butt of her gun went through her jaw and ripped it off. She was missing half her face and she was swallowing her teeth. All that happened when her 50-caliber machine gun smashed through the left side of the chopper when it crashed. Her legs and arms were crushed. Kirstie had brain and spinal damage. She thought she was going to die and that it was over for her. They don’t know why the helicopter crashed, but it was fast. When you fall at 150 ft. per second, there’s no time to wonder why. That was the day her career as a Marine ended. It was all she had wanted to do her whole life and now all she wanted to do was survive.

When she woke, she was choking on her own blood in her throat and nose. There was screaming. A medic told her not to close her eyes and stay with him. She knew that if she closed them, she would never open them again. They made it back to Camp Bastion and her long fight began. They really thought she would not make it, but Kirstie is a true Marine… a fighter and she hung on. She was so terrified, she kept throwing up on herself. She knew she would never be the same.

38 surgeries later, Kirstie has her life back. Her left leg has never been right and she lives in constant pain. The doctors wanted to amputate it below the knee this last summer, but Kirstie had one more thing to do before they did what needs to be done and they fit her with a more comfortable prosthetic. She strapped on a carbon-fiber leg brace and declared she was going for a 1,000 mile hike for Prince Harry’s Walking with the Wounded. She walked from Scotland to Britain and found in Prince Harry a kindred soul and a new lifelong friend.

Half a dozen wounded warriors made the trek. Kirstie was the only woman on the walk. She made the amazing journey, pain and all. And when she was done, she knew they would take her leg and she was cool with that. She just wants to get on with her life. It’s been three years since she almost died and they told her she would never walk again. Kirstie had other ideas and proved all of them wrong.

On losing her leg:

I can’t walk more than a quarter of a mile without it and I can’t run. My feeling is if this leg’s going to impede me then let’s get rid of it.

For me it’s about quality of life. I want to have kids one day and be able to run around the yard with them. Having this brace is a constant reminder of what I can’t do.

When I told my doctors I was not going to have the operation until later in the year they were pretty stunned, especially when I told them I was planning to walk 1,000 miles across Britain. It is the hardest thing I’ve done apart from my rehabilitation.

There have been four expeditions of Walking with the Wounded and Prince Harry has been on all of them. He really cares about veterans and I admire him a great deal. The expeditions have visited the North and South poles and Everest. Then there is this one that went from Scotland to Britain. The Walk of Britain has raised a great deal in public donations.

On this hike, the team was made up of British soldiers Stewart Hill, Matt Fisher, Alec Robotham and Scott Ransley, and American former serviceman Andrew Bement, along with Marine Kirstie Ennis. All of them are disabled in one way or another and received their injuries in the line of duty. All of them are incredible heroes and inspirational.

Kirstie looks wonderful these days. Blonde, tan and fit, the only signs that she was horribly injured are a scar on the left side of her face and her leg brace. She has never let being injured rule or destroy her life. She has had three years of intense rehabilitation and speech therapy. She had to learn to speak again. Now, she has a Masters in Business and Psychology. She’s also a stockbroker. She has a boyfriend named Brian, who is also a Marine who was horribly injured in a bomb blast. They’ve been together for a year.

Kirstie is an expert snowboarder and she was just named to the national team for paralympic swimming. She will compete in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in 2016 for wounded servicemen and women in Orlando next spring:

Confirmation about the national team came through while I was walking with Prince Harry in Norfolk. Harry was really proud and very excited for me. He loves to see veterans excel and overcome their disabilities, that’s what drives him and you can really see that.

Harry met Kirstie at the Warrior Games in Colorado in 2013. Those games were the inspiration for his Invictus Games. They became fast friends on The Walk of Britain. Soldiers are instantly brothers and sisters… more than just friends in fox holes, they share a common bond from the battlefield:

He seems so engaged and committed. He wanted to know my story and I felt I could open up to him and that he really listened. It was just like walking with a friend, or a brother.

The military is a family in that respect. It’s a brotherhood. It really meant something to have Harry walk with us. There were no feelings of superiority. We spent two days together, one walking in Shropshire where we kicked a ball around with [former American football star] Dan Marino which was pretty surreal and another day walking in Norfolk which was so beautiful and very special. There were no cameras that day and I told Harry about my time at Camp Bastion because we were serving in the same place at the same time.

We talked about our shared love of aviation and I asked him when he knew he wanted to be a soldier.

He said from when he was a little boy and that it had always been his dream and that the military has been the greatest thing for him. I was the same when I was a kid. All my dolls were dressed in Marine Corps clothes.

He’s so down to earth and very easy to get along with and he fitted right in with the group, especially with Scott (Ransley) who is blind in his right eye. He’s also very kind and when people came up to say “hi” he made the time for them, especially the kids and you could see it really made their day.

Much more at the link.

In our non-Council category, the winner was Mike Adams at TownhallGet Out of My Class and Leave America submitted by Bookworm Room . Let’s just say that it’s astonishing that a college professor with have to make these points to students at a major university who are supposedly young adults.

Here are this week’s full results. Fausta and The Razor were as unable to vote this week, but were not subject to the usual 2/3 vote penalty for not voting:

How To Bag a RINO: A Book Review

51SwDIG8mjL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_Gray Delany and Zach Werrell are household names to activists in and around Virginia’s now infamous 7th District. Once again, these two young gunslingers have teamed up to write an account of the campaign that shocked a nation, humbled the Washington Elite, and inspired grassroots activists from Hanover, Virginia, across every county and district within this United States of America. It was their campaign that energized an entire nation of grassroots activists to pressure their representatives, as if even the most sacrosanct amongst them were no longer invincible, for change. Today, not only have we seen the defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor at the hands of Dave Brat, but we’ve seen the surrender of Speaker of the House John Boehner at the hands of a nation.

How To Bag a RINO, by Gray Delany and Zach Werrell

Their story does not begin with a brilliant idea and a full proof plan. If you are expecting a secret formula, innovative fundraising ideas, or a genius way to start from nothing and start strong, then you don’t know the story of Dave Brat’s bid to challenge the seat of the third most powerful Republican in Washington D.C. This is a story of will, not genius.

This is a story about the vision (and a commitment to that vision) by those within Dave Brats’ inner circle. This is a story about the most active activists, committed beyond anything we’ve ever seen before – average citizens, abandoning their day to day for the taxing life of campaign operatives. And most importantly, this is a story about a candidate that actually was what he was, was what he said he was, and was what his district desired.

John Grisham, eat your heart out.

Now a Congressman, Economics Professor at Randolph Macon, Dave Brat, is everything conservative and libertarian activists have been asking for. This campaign could not have been fought with just anyone. After reading this book, I realize that you need more than just principle and philosophy, you need to be qualified. Dave Brat was qualified.

Furthermore, if you are living in a district, and hoping for change, but you have no network of patriotic and committed grassroots activists… forget it. None of this would have happened without them. If you want to know what it takes, as citizens in a district, to create change, real change, then you need to read this book and understand how instrumental the average citizen is in bagging a RINO.

Finally, the third component, and the reason why these two young twenty-somethings are able to write this book – you need simplicity itself: truth. You need to tell the truth about your current representative. You need to tell the truth that has been denied to the people living under establishment rule and rhetoric. Make them defend the truth, because the Eric Cantor’s and John McCain’s and John Boehner’s cannot defend themselves in the light of reality.

So if you find yourself in Arizona, Arkansas, Ohio, or Illinois, and you’re wanting to Bag a RINO of your own, you need to read this book. You’ve got to find a qualified candidate – of course that’s important. However, years before you do that you need to build an army of activists, who understand the inner workings of the Republican Party, and who understand the importance of every angle. Then you need to use those activists and that qualified candidate to run on philosophical and realistic principles and policies, in order to create the contrast you already know to exist.

For those of us who simply served as satellites around Dave Brat’s campaign, blowing on the embers of a fire that would rise to the attention of the national media, we’ll never forget the moments that lead to the victory. Virginia Right! was there. We believed. In fact, Tom White called the election, days before the first vote was counted. I even promised that the 7th District would send Dave Brat to Congress. Why? Because I met the men and women of the 7th District and I met Dave Brat. I know greatness when it talks to me. I am an admirer of so many people that I’ve met, that were it not for this book, I would never have known how instrumental they were in the greatest political victory in modern times.

But let me say this – because this is the most important thing – if you really want to Bag a RINO, you’ve got to find a qualified candidate. Dave Brat didn’t just defeat Eric Cantor. He has demonstrated himself to be the most principled Republican in Congress. You’ve seen him on FOX News, you’ve seen him on CSPAN, and you’ve probably seen him or read about him everywhere else. Why?

Unlike all these “TEA Party” candidates we elected to the House and to the Senate that joined the establishment, accepted the money, and became willing pawns in the corruption which is our Federal Government, Dave Brat, Congressman Dave Brat, has not wavered.

This book could not have been written, but for the fact that Congressman Dave Brat has not been a disappointment. The intelligence and character and understanding of economic and political philosophy that made Dave Brat the candidate that inspired me to start writing publicly again, are the same characteristics that made him the right David to defeat Goliath.

What Gray Delany and Zach Werrell have laid out in this book is indispensable wisdom for anyone looking for real representation in the House of Representatives. Read this book Virginia! Read this book Maryland! Read this book America! You want real change? You need to realize how hard it is to have, how hard it is to offer, and how hard it is to win. This is the playbook. This is the story. This is the book that every family frustrated by the hypocrisy and dishonesty of their Representatives in Washington DC should read, Democrat or Republican.

So tonight, not tomorrow, (or if you are reading this tomorrow, then today, not Thursday), pre-order How To Bag a RINO: The Whiz Kids Who Brought Down House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Learn the importance of truth in politicking.

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star Refuses to Run TEA Party Meeting Notice in a Paid Ad!

FredSupervisorI am rather baffled at why the Free Lance-Star received the ad below from the Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots, approved the ad and then took their money only to later notify the group that they would not run the ad.

The Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots have a meeting scheduled to discuss whether or not having the former campaign manager of one of the Supervisors for Spotsylvania County violates any ethics codes or conflict of interest laws and rules.

I think this is a valid topic to discuss and can see no reason the Free Lance-Star should discriminate against a group of citizens trying to hold government accountable.

I sent the following email to the Free Lance-Star editor this morning but have received no response so far:

Dear Mr. Jenkins,

I am the editor of the Conservative blog Virginia Right! and was contacted by a member of the Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots that let me know your paper accepted and approved an ad for the group, took payment and then decided not to run the ad.

I am writing to you to ask for an explanation of the reversal of the decision to print the meeting notice.

There are a couple of possible reasons that come to mind as to why you would refuse this ad, but I was hoping for an explanation from you to set the record straight. I plan to publish this story early this afternoon along with the ad early this afternoon and would appreciate a comment from you or an appropriate employee of the paper to include with my story.

Thank you for your time and I can be reached by email or at the number below.

Charleston Shooter Was on Drug Linked to Violent Outbursts Like Many Other Mass Shootings

Once again we find out that Dylann Root, the Charleston Church shooter was taking SSRI drugs. You would be hard pressed to find a mass shooting in the last 20 years – including Columbine – where the shooters were not on prescription drugs used to treat mental health problems. This does not mean that everyone taking Prozac or other similar drugs will kill people. Far from it. But as the press works to make this a hate crime, they are missing what could be the biggest story of the year.

The drugs we give our young people are one potential cause of these killings. Not racism, not hate. Just abnormal thoughts that end up being acted out. But the pro drug pushing crowd and the companies making billion on these drugs are not happy when someone mentions the obvious. And this is not a sudden and new discovery. The connection between SSRI drugs and mass killings are well documented.

According to InfoWars:

As the website SSRI Stories profusely documents, there are literally hundreds of examples of mass shootings, murders and other violent episodes that have been committed by individuals on psychiatric drugs over the past three decades.

Pharmaceutical giants who produce drugs like Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil spend around $2.4 billion dollars a year on direct-to-consumer television advertising every year. By running negative stories about prescription drugs, networks risk losing tens of millions of dollars in ad revenue, which is undoubtedly one of the primary reasons why the connection is habitually downplayed or ignored entirely.

Note – the link in the story above appeared on Drudge and is apparently down at this time. It may come back later. But here is an archived link to the list of incidents involving these drugs.

So let’s go ahead with the race riots in Charleston. By all means. I’m sure that will help. And I completely understand the media’s reluctance to report the truth since the drug manufacturers pump $2.4 billion a year into advertising these drugs. And murders are good for ratings.

But in the meantime, could some caring researchers get to the bottom of this?
