I just gotta admit it: I especially love headlines like this!
Poll: Sanders surges ahead of Clinton in New Hampshire
Feels like an alternative universe, doesn’t it? (I do not BTW believe in the latest attempt to explain how we live in such a special universe without a Supreme Being!) It would be an alternative universe on LSD if the blogger from Virginia got headlines like that! But it is a true headline – just the wrong Sanders – it’s Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders instead.
This article at The Hill talks about the latest New Hampshire poll showing Sanders ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by a margin of seven points. There is a great analysis of the poll here at the Washington Post. Turnout is key as to who wins. Youth is largely for Sanders and older Dems prefer Clinton.
I am increasingly coming to the conclusion that, no, Sanders will not win the Democratic nomination (if it were Sanders the blogger from Virginia, the Platform would need wholesale revision, starting with a reference to God explicitly in it!) but I think he could knock Clinton out of the race (if she is not knocked out by the email investigation – be careful what you ask for, Republicans, you might get it but too early!) and set the table for another candidate – either VP Joe Biden (the theory of radio host John Fredericks) or perhaps Al Gore (Here’s two articles on that possibility). My theory has Clinton as LBJ and Sanders as Joe McCarthy who knocked LBJ out of the race in ’68 and set the stage for Humphrey to run and Bobby Kennedy to surge until his assassination in June. But who is the Humphrey and/or RFK of 2016? This is what makes politics so much fun to watch. Maybe Sanders the blogger ought to run for something after all…
But why is Sanders doing so well (other than his neat last name!) right now? Because agree with him or not, you know what you will get with Sanders. He can’t be bought. He’s been around politics long enough to know the ropes. You know his positions and they are genuine (and almost entirely in error) and passionately held. Senator Sanders is the Dems Donald Trump (without some of the gaffes and baggage) and he should continue to do well absent a scandal or huge gaffe.
While Sanders COULD win the nomination, he is more likely to knock Hillary out. The GOP needs to be careful who they nominate. It may be close in the fall.
But wouldn’t it be great if Sen. Cruz was on that debate platform with Sanders? Or Carly Fiorina (technically a resident of the Old Dominion, by the way!) going at it with the senator from Vermont? Get out the popcorn! And we would have that major party nominee for President from a state with the smallest number of electoral votes (three) as well. Of course the best candidate right now is another Virginian: former Governor Jim Gilmore.
